So... Basically it's JD from Scrubs, but without Scrubs... And without JD, just his weird daydreaming + a lot of depression caused by midlife crisis.

"To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of LIFE." What a masterpiece!

Ben Stiller's take on the original story turns Walter into an awkward, maladaptive daydreamer who is only brought out of his shell through travel. This movie is an outstanding example of how far modern cinematography can come - every shot, every song, every dialogue is meticulously planned and placed in order to create a central message. I can't say I've ever seen a movie so well thought out, and I have to commend Stiller on his hard work and talent. Little things to notice in the film: - In the beginning, every background song is accompanied by a ticking sound, implying that Walter's life is running out while he wastes his time on a drab life. - Colours are dulled, and there are repetitive patterns everywhere - in buildings, hallways, Walter's budget book, etc. - His daydreaming significantly decreases as the movie goes by. - Sean O'Connell seems to represent Walter's alternate self - what his life might have been like if his childhood had been different. - Both Walter and 'Life' end up changing (Walter gains confidence, while Life goes online, downsizes, etc). - Screen size changes throughout the movie (screen is wider while he's travelling).

I think a good movie can be judged by how many times you can watch it and it keeps your attention.  I think a great movie can be judged by how many times you can watch it and it still moves you.  This is a great movie to me.  Beautifully told, beautifully acted, beautifully filmed, and most certainly beautifully scored.  I watch it at least once a year to get "centered" and remind myself how important the little things in life are.  Thank you, Mr. Stiller, for doing this right.

I was so impressed with the film and wanted to travel and get lost. After a year or so I quit my job and travelled solo on my motorcycle for 50 odd days and some 9,000kms covering some of the most breath taking places in india. Rewatching this film now, it portrays a lot of things. I can't explain some of the events that happened on the trip because it may seem very insignificant to others. But those moments are mine and life lasting. More like how Mitty never tries to explain the shark moment. Travel and you will know what I mean.

D. Paul Gladstone (11 months ago)
This will forever be one of my favourite movies because it had a few secrets. At first you watch the suffocating life of a man portrayed perfectly by Ben Stiller. In reality the company he works for is shutting down (Time Magazine). Something happens that cannot be explained that takes a dreamer on a long road of adventure. He begins to live his dreams, which is something few of us will ever do. In the end he grows a spine and tells the git who is managing the transition what he thinks of him and his methods. As the beer commercial says on goggle box, "He's the most famous man in the world." He does what the famous photographer friend does including playing football with the local guides and his alter ego Sean Penn. As his friend said at the LA Airport, he was expecting someone different but what he got was Indiana Jones. The movie doesn't play to you mind, it plays to your heart.

This movie makes me want to explore the world, and break out of my mold. It really is a great message and a hell of an inspiring movie. Thumbs up to the original author and Ben Stiller for reenacting this nice work.

I went to a dollar tree the other day and i saw this movie for blu-ray that came with the Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD, and a disk that has all of this movies soundtracks. I still can't believe it was only a dollar. :D

Wish this was a little less about the romance and a little more about the travel. Thought the best moments were him experiencing the world but the movie was more focussed on guy trying to impress girl (still an awesome movie though).

Sorry to say but this movie didn't receive the recognition it deserves. I believe this was a great movie with a greater message to the people watching it. It was an underrated movie and believe that the harsh critics and reviews said about the movie should be reconsidered.

This movie changed my perception of life. If I never watched this movie I would have probably have lived my life in quiet desperation
a truly exceptional movie, the people who listen to rotten tomatoes are but fools paying heed to fools! Really, the criticisms I read on RT were all either deeply based in the tired thoughts of jaded critics or firmly rooted in simple stupidity. Each and every one of them missed the point, it was disheartening to see how grandly it flew over their heads! I could see that these were the criticisms of bitter men and women whose lives were unremarkable and nearly over, with comlaints such as, "it was highly unrealistic," or "the dream sequences were almost over-the-top in comparison to the real world," or "the film requires you to latch on to a dreamy, airy, whimsical tone..." Why should a film about breaking free from the dull confines of reality be REALISTIC to your dull and confined mind??? OF COURSE the dream sequences are over-the-top in comparison to the real world, THEY ARE DREAM SEQUENCES. And why shouldn't you latch onto a dreamy tone?? Don't you film critics remember the very first moving pictures? A trip to the moon??? Méliès, ring a bell??? The heart of cinema was, in the beginning, dreams. Our dreams have always been the heart of cinema. Film has always been the stuff of dreams; or have you critics forgotten that? And as for those who complain that the movie doesn't match the story, have you read the original short story? I mean, of course it's not. It would be a very sad and short movie if it were an identical adaption. Don't be silly.

terrestrial bioluminescent Couldn't agree more. Rotten Tomatoes is so wrong on so many films I sometimes wonder if they've even watched the movies they're critiquing.
