Working 24 Hours Straight at Waffle House | Bon Appetit

08:29
Bon Appetit's Andrew Knowlton works a 24-hour shift at Waffle House. The first Waffle House diner opened in Atlanta, Georgia in 1955. Today, the chain restaurant has more than 1,700 locations in 25 states, mostly in the South. Waffle House is known for being open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Knowlton's full day on the job starts a little before 7 AM. All Waffle House employees must be either clean-shaven or wear a beard guard, so Knowlton decides to shave the beard. Once Knowlton has his uniform, his on-the-job training an orientation begins. He gets to work making bacon, eggs, waffles, Texas toast, and hash browns. During his down time, Knowlton sits down with Waffle House co-founder, Tom Forkner to learn more about the eatery's history. One of the daily tasks at Waffle House for employees is mixing waffle batter using a power drill attached to a whisk. From there, Knowlton powers through the lunch shift into the evening hour dinner rush and well into late night. As early morning approaches again, Knowlton has lost all track of time but has gained appreciation and admiration for all Waffle House employees. Why Koi Fish Are So Expensive | So Expensive

05:04
Koi fish are colorful patterned common carp that are now celebrated in annual koi shows and kept in ponds all over the world. Some are worth millions. ------------------------------------------------------ #Koi #Fish #BusinessInsider Following is a transcript of the video: Anything strike you as special about this fish here? Well, it's worth 1.8 million dollars. It won grand champion at the All Japan Koi Show in 2017, and is the most expensive koi fish ever sold. Koi may just look like an oversized goldfish, but they're not even remotely related. Koi are actually a type of carp, and today they're some of the most expensive pet fish in the world. But why? Koi were originally raised in Japan in the 1700s when rice farmers first began breeding them for their distinct colors and patterns, similar to how we breed dogs for their specific traits. And just like prized dog breeds, Japanese people take koi breeding very seriously. There are regular competitions to name the top koi. Judges and buyers pay attention to how healthy its skin looks, its size and body shape, and how gracefully the fish moves in the water. But the most important trait of all is the koi's coloring. The best koi have a good balance of colors and patterns according to their variety. For example, there are koi with light blue spots, ones with large red patches on their backs, or all-metallic gold. But the most winning fish often just boil down to these three varieties. They're often the most valuable. They dominate the shows, winning nearly every major category each year. And the better-looking the fish, the more a buyer is willing to pay. Yvo: Yeah, it depends. You can buy some small and cheap koi fish for a couple of bucks, but also, yeah, it can get up really, really high to thousands, ten thousands of dollars. Narrator: That's Yvo de Wal. He's a koi hobbyist and seller in the Netherlands, and he heads up the YouTube channel Koi Partner. Each year he visits Japan to shop for koi. Yvo: The breeders are located there, and they have experience with their bloodlines for many, many generations. Narrator: You see, bloodlines are just as prized in koi as they are in dogs because some of these koi are the result of decades of selective breeding. I mean, just take a look at the koi's wild relative, the common carp. Its dark colors would be considered unattractive for a koi, but it's perfect protection against predators in the wild. So how do you get from this to this? Well, it's actually similar to how we got from this to this, except koi breeders mainly select for size and color and ignore... Fluffiness. Koi have six types of color cells in their skin. Their cells can be red, yellow, black, white, blue, or metallic. Now in order to get a beautiful, reddish-orange pattern like the one on this 1.8 million dollar fish, you need to select for fish that have a white body and lots of red cells that concentrate in large patches. Red and white are important colors in Japanese culture, representing joy and purity. But having the right colors is only part of it. A koi's color cells sit at different depths in the skin, some right near the surface and some deeper in, which ultimately determines how bright the fish appears. The brighter the fish, the bigger the price tag. Today there are about 120 varieties. To compare, there are about 200 breeds of dogs. But when it comes down to it, breeding koi is a lot harder. A single koi can give birth to hundreds of thousands of baby fish at a time. Yvo: I think we are talking about millions and millions of fish per breeder. Narrator: So breeders must choose wisely. One breeder, for example, reports that he starts with 3 million fish and selects 15,000 to raise over the first year. From that he chooses 1,000 to continue to raise the second year. Yvo: Yeah, it's a really hard job for the breeders. Narrator: But in the end, all that hard work is worth it. The breeder of this grand champion waited until she was nine years old to sell her at auction. And by bringing in a world record of 1.8 million, the breeder got not only a huge return on investment but a priceless reputation boost in the koi community. ------------------------------------------------------ Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more. 10 Terrifying Places Science Still Can't Explain

13:01
How to Learn More about the Earth. The scientific community has made great strides in discovering a lot about the planet we call home. Yet there’s still so much we don’t know! In this video, we’ll tell you about 10 of the most mysterious and bewildering places on Earth that even scientists can’t explain! Magnetic Hill, Skeleton Lake, Boiling River and a Dancing Forest. Plus, some mysterious waters where ships disappear. TIMESTAMPS Skeleton Lake 0:56 The Hessdalen Lights 1:53 Lake Anjikuni 2:41 The Devil's Sea 3:43 The Lake Michigan Triangle 4:44 Magnetic Hill 6:11 The Devil's Kettle 6:57 The Patomskiy Crater 7:57 The Boiling River 9:55 The Dancing Forest 11:16 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Every year when the snow and frozen water melt, Roopkund Lake in the Himalayas reveals 300 skeletons dumped in it. -The Hessdalen Lights occasionally turn yellowish or reddish, and nobody knows what makes them change color. -Canadian fur trapper Joe Labelle came to a village located on the shore of Lake Anjikuni to find it completely deserted. -Some folks call the Devil's Sea the Pacific Bermuda Triangle since ships and planes tend to disappear there with the same regularity as its North Atlantic counterpart. -The Lake Michigan Triangle has been gaining its notorious reputation since 1891 when a ship disappeared in its waters, along with its crew of seven sailors. -If you turn off the engine of your car and leave it in neutral on the Magnetic Hill, your vehicle will start climbing ahead, possibly at a speed of 12 miles per hour. -About a mile before the river empties into Lake Superior, a rocky outcrop splits it in two. And while the eastern flow drops 50 feet down and keeps flowing into the lake, the western part travels 10 feet down into a giant hole... and vanishes. -Located in Siberia, the Patomskiy Crater is described as a mound with a perfectly circular shape. It’s as big as a 25-story building, sits right in the middle of a wooded area with its top chopped off, and presents quite a sight. -The Boling River really is steaming hot. At a temperature of 187°F, it’s not exactly boiling, but it’s pretty close. -Located on the thin Curonian Spit that divides the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon is one of the strangest places on Earth. The pine trees in this forest have shockingly unusual shapes: they twist in spirals and circles along the ground. Visit Venice - The Don'ts of Visiting Venice, Italy

08:01
From Overpriced Gondola Rides to Slippery Streets to Overpriced and Underwhelming Tourist Restaurants this Video Covers What You Shouldn't Do When you Go to Venice, Italy. Italy is an amazing city, well worth visiting and exploring, but there are a few things tourists and travelers should avoid or not do when they come to Venezia, Italia. Don't - bring too much luggage, having to lug it over all of those bridges and down long streets is not a fun thing to do, Don't - be surprised if the locals have different lines than the tourists Don't - pay for a toilet, go get a Spritz or a Coffee instead. You have to pay for something make it a treat, not a toilet. Don-t - expect a cheap gondola ride. they are a bit pricey and you will need to pay more to get him to sing. Don't - forget to explore outside the main island of Venice. There are great places to visit around Venice like the Murano glass factories or farther afield in Padova and Vicenza. Don't - be surprised if you have walk on risers occasionally when the city floods. Don't - wear skimpy clothes if you are hoping to get into Basilica San Marco. There are a lot more don'ts of visiting Venice, but why don't you watch and learn more! 19:05
WOWWW!! We found INSANE Seafood in Sri Lanka! This MASSIVE Seafood Fish Market and home cooked FISH CURRY was HEAVEN! Sri Lanka has some AMAZING Seafood, and today, we're bringing YOU to the local fish market to pull in a HEAVY net of Sri Lankan seafood and bring it to our local friends home for a HUGE Home Cooked FEAST! Make sure to follow along behind the scenes ►https://www.instagram.com/thefoodranger And make sure to subscribe to Ruzaina's channel here: ►https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDPfZmaXpxEXNCctdSyrN1A In Southern Sri Lanka, in Galle, we're bringing you to the local fish market and street food area to pull in a HUGE fishing net with the local fishermen. We're showing you how catching fish is done every day for the local fishermen and seafood vendors here in Galle, and also showing you the fish cutting! Sri Lanka has some of the BEST Street Food in the world! Today, we're buying a MASSIVE fish from the fish market in Galle, Sri Lanka, and then bringing it to the fish cutting station to chop up into massive steak like chunks and bring to our local friends home to cook into a CREAMY and slightly SPICY fish CURRY! The fish curry is prepared 2 ways, the first is the body and is in a mustardy and slightly sour and peppery broth, and the second way is a fish head curry that is quite creamy with home made coconut milk. When we brought this fish from the fish market, many of the other SPICY and flavourful Sri Lankan home cooked curries were already prepared, so we watched the final preparation of these homemade Sri Lankan recipes in the traditional Sri Lankan kitchen. The pots were all made of clay and the fire was made with Sri Lankan Ceylon cinnamon! There were quite a few fish in the net when we pulled it in at this local fish market in Galle. The famous fish are the pariah fish and the big "malet" fish as the locals called it. All of these fish can either be cooked up Sri Lankan style or also BBQ on one of the many restaurants found on the street side in Galle. This is the fifth street food video from Sri Lanka. We've filmed some amazing Sri Lankan seafood videos, like a Sri Lankan mud crab tour: ►Sri Lankan Mud Crab Tour: https://youtu.be/UTJ3t4KGntw We've also brought you to one of the BEST Seafood Restaurants in Colombo and for a full on street food tour of Colombo: ► Enter the Ministry of Crab in Colombo: https://youtu.be/wrEwAopCBqo and we've also brought you for some other delicious home cooked Sri Lankan food: ►Home Cooked Sri Lankan food: https://youtu.be/bIhjRXPQvk8 ►Make sure to Subscribe to The Food Ranger here: http://bit.ly/2cCy2ub For detailed addresses to these Sri Lankan restaurants, visit The Food Ranger blog: ► https://www.thefoodranger.com/ ► BRAND NEW Chili Oil 4 Life Merch here: https://www.thefoodranger.com/Chilioil4life The Food Ranger YouTube: ► www.youtube.com/thefoodranger The Food Ranger Instagram: ► www.instagram.com/thefoodranger The Food Ranger FB: ► www.facebook.com/thefoodranger ► MUSIC I USE (Great For YouTubers): http://bit.ly/FoodRangerMusic ►BEST VPN FOR CHINA (ACCESS YOUTUBE): http://bit.ly/AccessYouTubeinChina ► MERCH AVAILABLE HERE: https://shop.bonfire.com/thefoodranger/ We're going for more street food around the world!

Finding Balance in Korean Sword Making

03:29
Balance can be described as finding the equalizing point between two opposing forces, and as both a design principle and a life philosophy, it is central to Korean culture. For master swordsmith Eun-cheul Lee, balance is essential to the creation of his hand-crafted swords. He revived a traditional Korean style of sword making that had been lost for 100 years. By blending different types of iron ore to make the steel used in his swords, he achieves balance in his blades and successfully brings an ancient technique into modern times. Takanakuy: Fistfighting in the Andes

19:42
Once a year around Christmas in the Peruvian Andes, the whole town gets together to dance, drink and beat the hell out of each other. Christmas festivities vary widely around the world, and are widely a steaming crock of boring shit. Ooh, Swedish girls wear a crown of candles the night before Chistmas? Please tell me more about this scintillating national cust-snzzzZZZZZZZZZ. In the Peruvian Andes, folks know how to celebrate the season right. What they do is, they put on a colorful ski-mask, dress up like Mad Max mountain bikers, tie a dead eagle to their heads, and get drunk and dance for about a week straight. Then, come Christmas morning, they all gather together in the middle of town and beat the baby bejesus out of each other. Now we're talking, right? The festival is called Takanakuy and its equal parts sporting event, indigenous display of hypermasculine defiance in the face of all the lilywhite metropolitan sissies in Lima, and makeshift judicial system. The province of Chumbivilcas, where Takanakuy takes place, has about three cops total and is a stomach-wrecking 10-hour drive through the mountains to the nearest courthouse. So if you've got a beef with a neighbor or someone's taken your girl or sheep, you don't go crying about it to some judge. You bury it away until Christmas, then get yourself all beered up and exact some Andean justice with your fists and feet. Guys, girls, little kids, old drunk men in high-waisted pants; everybody in town fights at Takanakuy. This year we decided to forego the annual family snoozefest and head into the mountains of Peru to test our mettle against the some of the hardiest people from one of the harshest environments in the Americas. We hope you like it, since it broke our mothers' hearts. 1 Day CAMBODIAN STREET FOOD TOUR - Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner in Phnom Penh, Cambodia!

18:57
Subscribe for more videos► http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe T-shirts for sale here► https://migrationology.com/store/ On this Cambodian street food tour in Phnom Penh, I’m taking you on a one day tour to eat authentic Khmer breakfast lunch and dinner in a single day. Cambodian Breakfast - 7 am There are plenty of dishes you can eat for breakfast in Cambodia, but nothing is as popular or widely available as a dish called bai sach chrouk, grilled thin strips of marinated pork over broken rice with pickles and soup on the side. It’s a simple combination, but a plate for breakfast is extremely satisfying. Price - 3,500 KHR ($0.84) Cambodian Lunch - 11:30 am Just outside of Psar Chas (Old Market) in Phnom Penh, you’ll find an abundance of colorful Khmer street food stall that serve all sorts of grilled river fish, and a huge selection of different dishes to choose from. While most locals get their food for takeaway, a kind lady offered us a seat in front of her house to sit down and eat. It was an amazing and extremely local Cambodian food lunch. The grilled fish and the parhok were my favorite dishes. Lunch total price - 35,000 KHR ($8.42) Cambodian Dinner - 6:30 pm For Cambodian dinner we decided to eat Cambodian bbq, and it’s a type of restaurant you’re going to want to try when you’re in Cambodia. 34 Langeach Sros is a Cambodian beer garden style restaurant, and they have a pretty good assortment of grilled meats and unique Cambodian delicacies. It was one of the tastiest Cambodian meals I’ve ever had in my life. The ant larvae and goat was amazing, and the eel fried with herbs was outstanding. Thank you to Lina from http://www.movetocambodia.com/ for the recommendation. Total price - $22.88 That completes an authentic tour of Cambodian food in a single day, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
