Hey everyone, I am Peter from TopThink, and today we discover the 4 tricks to be the center of attention in every situation
But quickly before that, make sure to subscribe to TopThink so you don’t miss out on our new animated series about psychology, science, and lots of other nerdy stuff. Now, let’s begin.
Number 1: Use someone’s name when making a statement
Dale Carnegie, a famous author and public speaker, once wrote that “a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.”
Carnegie was right. Using someone’s name captures their attention immediately, because few group situations will focus on one individual. Thus, when people hear their name, it’s a very pleasant surprise.
Here is exactly how to use this principle: Imagine that you’re at a social event with your friends. Things seem to be going well for other people, but you aren’t feeling super social. Then, one of your friends notices you and mentions your name. Immediately, your attention is captured and all your focus is turned towards that person.
As if it was magic, what your friend is about to say has suddenly become much more interesting, and they have successfully implemented this concept.
Number 2: A genuine smile.
The smile is one of the most underrated tools in the social toolbox. The movement communicates openness, releases tension, and can make a fabulous first impression.
However, there is some deeper psychology at work here. According to Psychology Today, even a forced smile can induce a good mood, and make other people want to talk to you.
In addition, genuine smiles are scarily contagious. Here is how. When we are interacting with other people, we use our brains a lot. Your mind has to interpret small differences in facial patterns, and actually recreates these patterns in the brain.
Since humans naturally mimic facial expressions, the people you are interacting with will start to smile as well.
Essentially, smiling draws an aura of positivity and energy around you. As a result, people will focus more on you in social situations, and associate you with having a good time.
But don’t take my word for it. The next time you are in a relatively mellow or underwhelming conversation, give a big smile and watch the mood quickly lighten up.
Number 3: Wear something interesting.
Now of course, the word interesting is pretty open ended. But what I mean by “interesting” is something that will be brought up in a discussion naturally, at which point the conversation will be directed towards you.
For example, I personally love to wear shirts that look like this. People are always quick to laugh and ask me about it, and it is a great conversation starter.
If you do decide to wear something funny, make sure to be confident about it. Wear it proudly. People are strongly drawn to those who seem comfortable in any situation.
If you don’t have a dog or cat shirt, try to dress as nicely as possible for your social event. Dressing well will make you far more likely to be noticed by others and will help you stay calm and confident.
Number 4: Give compliments
Giving people truthful, honest compliments will make them like you a lot more. Look for subtle things about someone that you know are deliberate.
For example, a common trend for women these days is to shape their eyebrows, but a lot of guys don’t notice this.
Similarly, men often put a lot of effort into their workouts or their hair. Look for the best in people, and watch them respond enthusiastically when you notice.
In conclusion, when you’re in a conversation, try using someone’s name to capture that individual’s attention. Try to genuinely smile as much as you can, as long as it’s not too forced or fake. Wear eye-catching clothing that’s sure to capture the attention of others. Finally, give real compliments. Like the saying goes, give, and you shall receive.
